About Malu Hall
I got my Physiotherapy Degree, as a mature age student when I was 48 years old, from Sydney University, in 1979. Subsequently I worked at The Royal North Shore Hospital for one year, Commonwealth Rehabilitation Centre for six years, until we moved to Katoomba in the Blue Mountains, where I’ve been involved in paediatrics and specialized in disability as well as special needs.
I worked in the local hospital, at home, as a schools therapist in schools with special disability units, at a children’s home as sole therapist, and with the Department of Education’s Resource Support Unit, with a team of therapist consultants, traveling all over New South Wales, visiting special schools or mainstream schools with special units for students with disabilities.
All this experience taught me that despite the years and work done, looking for some way of holding and positioning people with little or no trunk control, no one had as yet developed anything that actually works in most of these situations. This was, and still is all therapists’ worst problem, especially when it comes to transporting these people.
Commercially available baby car seats or wheelchairs don’t readily do the job, and often need lots of modifications. Traveling in a wheelchair requires the correct restraints and a special vehicle, making it very expensive and prohibitive for a lot of families. This is why I developed “The Malu Positioning Triangle”.
